SPRING BEARS IN FOCUS
Photography Week at Knight Inlet Lodge
WITH EDDY SAVAGE
What is 'Spring Bears in Focus'?
Canadian Wildlife Photographer, Bear Guide, and Author Eddy Savage is teaming up with the world renowned Knight Inlet Lodge for an epic week of Grizzly Bear photography. Eddy has guided groups and worked with film crews at Knight Inlet Lodge for over a decade. He brings an intimate knowledge of the area and resident bears together with his passion for photography to provide an unparalleled photography experience through the region.
Working together, Eddy Savage and Knight Inlet Lodge have created a "photographers dream itinerary" for the Spring Bears in Focus adventure. If you're looking for a grizzly bear focused adventure with the possibility of moms and cubs, breeding bears, and other spring behaviors, this trip is for you. It's for those keen on photography, designed by a professional photographer and guide.
See below for highlights.
Itinerary Overview
Here's a quick summary of what's planned for the Spring Bears in Focus Photo Week. This itinerary has been meticulously designed by Expert Bear Guide & Photographer Eddy Savage. Eddy has been leading bear tours at Knight Inlet Lodge for over a decade and brings a wealth of experience and local knowledge to this photography tour. The dates of this trip were specifically chosen to maximize bear viewing opportunities. Eddy has selected the dates with the best (from his experience) tide times for optimal grizzly bear photography.
Our photography tour starts in Campbell River, BC. All guests will need to arrive the night prior to flying into the lodge due to float-plane logistics. We leave early tomorrow morning and we all need to be on-site. Eddy will be available this evening to answer questions, answer any gear-related queries, and to greet everyone joining this tour.
Our float-plane departs from Campbell River at 0900 and we'll all have to be at the terminal by 0815. We'll load our bags, have an introduction to the facilities, and fly to the lodge. The flight transits over beautiful coastal scenery with excellent views of the mainland Coast Mountains, alpine lakes and terrain, striking inlets, and many islands. Once at the lodge, we'll split off for a quick orientation before heading out for a quick introduction to the region and potential first bear sightings.
After lunch, we'll gather for a formal introduction to the week, discuss opportunities, and how to best prepare for the rest of the day. Grizzly bear photography is going to be our main focus. We can anticipate being out until dinner, and after dinner, weather depending, we'll go out for some golden hour shots.
Note: Once we arrive at the lodge, Eddy Savage will be briefed by the lodge crew about existing wildlife opportunities. He will then come up with a concise plan to maximize our photo ops throughout the day.
Now that we're settled into our full days at Knight Inlet Lodge, our photo tour has special access and permission to depart early and return late, and Eddy will dictate the schedule as conditions and wildlife reports indicate. This amount of flexibility is reserved for the photo-tours only.
Early Morning Excursions: Each morning there will be an optional early morning departure. Typically departing between 0500 and 0530, we'll take a 30 foot vessel out into Knight Inlet and spend a couple of hours looking for bears and photographing in the early morning light before returning to breakfast.
Flexible activities & extended tour times: Eddy will structure the morning and afternoon activities with maximum photo opportunities in mind. If bear activity is good, we'll stay out longer. If bear activity is slow, or conditions too challenging, we'll focus on something else and return to the search later. This photo tour is all about flowing with the movements of wildlife, light, and weather to get the most of our stay.
Evening Excursions: Spring time makes for long days. Sunset times will be between 2115 and 2130 and we'll head out after dinner for 1-2 hours to maximize the golden light. Whether it's a scenic cruise to catch the alpenglow on the 2000m (6500ft) tall peaks that flank the inlet, or returning to where a bear was sighted to capture it during golden-hour, we'll take advantage of good weather.
Full Day Customized Bear & Marine Wildlife Tour: One of these days, selected based on most favourable conditions, will be a full-day excursion with larger vessels into lesser-traveled bear viewing areas with potential for big rewards. Several stretches of coastline, coves, passages, and bays nearby are known for the grizzly bears and black bears that frequent their shores and beaches. Additionally, Pacific White-Sided Dolphins, Harbour Porpoise, Sea Otters, Dall's Porpoise, Orca, Humpback Whales, and other marine mammals may be sighted on our full day expedition. We'll also visit areas known for their migratory birds with Harlequin Ducks, Marbled Murrelets, and Barrow's Goldeneye nesting nearby.
Photography Lectures, Guidance, and Review: Eddy has created several photography lectures related directly to Knight Inlet and his experience as a grizzly bear guide. He'll work hard to pass on his hard-earned lessons learnt from intensively photographing grizzly bears, polar bears, and black bears for over a decade. Additionally, throughout each day, Eddy will make space to review your images and provide feedback (as much or as little as you'd like) and offer informal photo-editing demos.
The last morning at Knight Inlet Lodge is not only for farewells. We will have an optional early morning pre-breakfast departure in addition to a post-breakfast tour closer to the lodge. It's not over until it's over. After checking out from the lodge, we will depart Knight Inlet Lodge at 0930 and return to Campbell River via float-plane. Once back in Campbell River, the tour officially ends

Springtime is ripe with grizzly bear drama
As the grizzly bears in the area come down from their winter hibernation in the mountains, they come down in higher density in food dense coastal areas. Moms with cubs and sub-adults alike are often on the move, negotiating around mating adult bears.
